@david - Yes I went fully self hosted. It's not cheap, but the cost is fixed unlike the autoresponder and SMTP companies who charge either by the subscriber or by the email. Technically, it can also be very challenging to get setup correctly. There are lots of pieces to the "delivery puzzle." But I have learned a lot.
And so far the performance has been outstanding.!
